June 26, 2016: Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina officially inaugurated the Construction works of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT Line-6 or Metro Rail) and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects today. Both the projects are first of their kind in the country.
The inaugural function was held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) at 10:00AM this morning. Honorable Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Mr. Obaidul Quader and the Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, His Excellency Masato Watanabe spoke on the occasion.
The Honorable Secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division Mr. M.A.N. Siddique delivered the welcome speech of the program. He ran through a Power Point presentation for the audience highlighting the Government’s various achievements and plans in implementing high profile landmark projects in view to modernize the Transportation infrastructure of the country.
His Excellency Masato Watanabe, the Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, reiterated his Government’s continued commitment in partnering the Socio-Economic Development of Bangladesh.
The Honorable Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Mr. Obaidul Quader laid out the multifaceted Development initiatives taken up by the Government in moving the country forward and thanked the Prime Minister for leading the country in the right direction, setting the right examples, making the nation proud and stand taller.
The Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina unveiled the inaugural stones for the construction of both the projects and happily announced, “Today is a joyous day for the people of the capital, as it marks the beginning of the construction works of the long-awaited first-ever Metro Rail and the Bus Rapid Transit in Bangladesh.” Citing examples of her government’s various measures in reducing the Traffic congestion situation in the Capital, she said, her administration has been relentlessly trying to ensure smooth movement for the people of this Mega city.
She said a good number of Flyovers, Railroad overpasses, Roads and Bridges leading to and from the city have been constructed in and around the capital. "Commuter trains have been introduced, the elevated expressway is under implementation."
She also laid out her Government’s plan to construct a combination of Road, Railway and Waterways surrounding the Capital that will ease the sufferings of the commuters to a greater extent. She said, once implemented, the combined Road, Railway and Waterways circular route will cut commuter expenditure and save time, while they could reach their destination trouble free within the fastest possible time.
Ministers, Advisers to the Prime Minister, Parliament Members, Diplomats, Heads of different Donor Agencies, High Civil and Armed Forces Officials, Consultants of both the Projects and Representatives of the Construction companies were present at the Grand function. The Capital took a festive mood as all Roads leading to the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) were decorated with Banners, Festoons containing Graphics and information related to the MRT and BRT projects.
